We welcomed more healthcare professionals from all over the country, offered more educational sessions with top-notch speakers, unveiled more innovation, had an iconic keynote speaker and threw a bigger party than ever before. Here are our top 10 favorite moments from the InstaMed User Conference 2018.

We Talked With a Silicon Valley Icon
This year’s keynote speaker was Steve Wozniak, inventor of the personal computer and co-founder of Apple. Woz helped us kick off a full day of educational sessions by sharing his insights on technology, innovation and the impacts and opportunities of living in an always-connected world. Woz also revealed his opinion of tech giants like Amazon, Uber and even Apple getting into healthcare: big companies aren’t healthcare experts, and  true innovation comes from companies who know and understand healthcare.


We Welcomed More Payers and Providers Than Ever Before
We wanted the InstaMed User Conference 2018 to be our biggest yet – and we succeeded. This year’s conference sold out as we welcomed providers and payers from all across the country to Philadelphia to talk about healthcare payments. Bringing together all healthcare stakeholders not only inspires productive conversation, but also creates great networking opportunities with colleagues of diverse experiences and backgrounds. We’re looking forward to growing even bigger in 2019!


Our CEO Demoed New Tech
InstaMed CEO and co-founder Bill Marvin walked us through a typical provider waiting room experience and showed us how it could be better with InstaMed Engage, the newest addition to InstaMed’s full suite of payment solutions. With Engage, Bill was able to skip the line at the front desk and check-in from his phone. He reviewed his benefit information, saw that he owed his provider an outstanding balance, paid his copay and enrolled in eStatements and automatic payments – all from his phone and all in under three minutes. We Said, “Alexa, Pay My Healthcare Bill”
The Innovation Lab is an opportunity for conference attendees to get up close and personal with innovations happening in healthcare payments. This year’s lab featured a demonstration of the future of the consumer healthcare payment experience. Using Amazon Alexa, members of the InstaMed Product team easily paid healthcare bills with just a few simple voice instructions to the virtual assistant. As technology advances and consumer demands continue to influence the healthcare industry, payment experiences like this one will become the new normal – and InstaMed is ready to lead the innovation.


We Heard From Payers Who Are Creating a Customer-Obsessed Culture
In an educational session from our payer track, Curtis Kopf and Torben Nielson of Premera Blue Cross offered a how-to guide for payers when it comes to creating a customer-obsessed culture. They shared Premera’s trailblazing success of transforming the traditional culture at a health plan by focusing on the customer. Premera has achieved a customer-success culture by making the customer’s voice ubiquitous, celebrating customer centricity and rewarding customer champions. They also talked about how innovation has become part of Premera’s DNA with initiatives like test kitchens and hackathons. The inspired audience of payers had plenty of questions on how to replicate Premera’s success at their organizations.


We Saw Patient Engagement As a Major Theme Among Providers
Our provider education track was comprised of engaging speakers from forward-thinking organizations who are trailblazing the path toward better healthcare payment experiences. Core to this goal is improving patient engagement in the billing and payments process, and we saw this as a consistent theme across provider sessions. What was clear is that patient engagement drives results: Andrew Kouba of Abilene Diagnostic Clinic shared how the physician group reduced patient A/R to 2% of total A/R with enhanced patient statements; Polina Goncharova and Bill Chae of Obility talked about increasing upfront collections by 106% in just one month by discussing payment responsibility with patients earlier on in a healthcare encounter; Joe Clark of Sierra Pacific Orthopedics explained how his clinic automates over 80% of patient collections by offering automated payment options.


We Ate Our Way Around the World (Then Danced It Off)
After a full day of educational sessions and innovation demonstrations, InstaMed User Conference 2018 attendees were ready to have a little fun. First, we took attendees on a trolley tour of historic Philadelphia. Stops included the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross’s house and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The tour ended at the Reading Terminal Market, the site for this year’s Annual InstaMed Network Bash. The Annual InstaMed Network Bash offers conference attendees an opportunity to network with industry peers in a fun and relaxed environment. Attendees indulged in diverse culinary offerings from over a dozen eateries, then danced it all off with the help of an awesome DJ.


Then, Just to Be Sure, We Also Worked It Off
This year, we offered conference attendees the chance to squeeze in a workout or two. At Boot Camp With Ben, InstaMed’s own Ben Bartholomew led fitness enthusiasts of all levels and experiences in fun, upbeat workouts. Ben is a former Division 1 and NFL New England Patriots football player, and he loves to take his workouts on the road. Keep an eye out for a Boot Camp With Ben session at an upcoming conference!

We Got a First-Look at the Latest Trends in Healthcare Payments Report
After breakfast on Wednesday morning, InstaMed CTO and co-founder Chris Seib pulled up some insightful data that proved why healthcare needs to deliver on consumer demands. Based on survey results and data from the InstaMed platform, we know that consumers are more and more interested in mobile experiences and the ability to pay and manage all of their healthcare bills in one place.


We Found Our Inner Superheroes
To end the conference, closing keynote speaker Ryan Estis inspired attendees to find their inner superhero. Referencing real-life stories and third-party data, Ryan explained how we have the ability to create meaningful experiences in our work and in our personal lives by re-evaluating the way we solve problems and communicate with others. By the end of his talk, all attendees were on their feet showing off their best superhero stance. We think all attendees left the conference feeling inspired to conquer any quest in healthcare payments – and beyond.
