Every year, the InstaMed Consumer Healthcare Payments Survey is commissioned to better understand the experiences of consumers in the industry. The online surveys provide qualitative, independently gathered data to create the Trends in Healthcare Payments Annual Report.
The report is published by J.P. Morgan Healthcare Payments for the purpose of objectively educating the market and promoting awareness, change and greater efficiency. Now in its sixteenth year, the mission of the report has not changed.
The data compiled for the online survey comes from respondents who are a representative sample of the United States population who paid a medical bill for themselves or a dependent and had health insurance in 2025.
In this survey, you will find insights on:
- How consumers prefer to pay medical bills, including online channels and other methods.
- Whether people feel they have choice in payment methods and how lack of choice can affect payment behavior.
- Interest in payment plans and financing options for medical bills.
- How important upfront cost clarity is, and how often consumers know what they’ll owe before a visit.
- Common sources of confusion in medical bills and explanations of benefits (EOBs).
- Refund experiences and preferences, including what consumers find most frustrating.
